A great day for freedom

Wow, its been so long since I blogged. And so much has happened meanwhile. Let me summarize (in no particular order):

  • I finally built a successful Hackintosh. From wanting a real Mac to building my own Mac. Went through lot of troubled times but victory tastes sweet now. OS X just rocks. Can’t imagine going back to Windoze. All I need is to get Leopard working. Meanwhile also upgraded to a Core2Duo, P35 chipset based board and Viewsonic 2025wm LCD monitor. My computing experience is nirvana now. And oh yea, the computer gallops. ;)
  • Successfully WiFi-ed my  house. So let me just say that my computing experience is pure nirvana. All I need now is a Macbook Pro.
  • Visited Silent Valley and Hampi. Both trips were extremely satisfying, soul-wise and photography-wise. Updated Pixelshooter.net with photos and travelogues. Now my website has significant content. That is satisfying too.
  • Won a photography competition at work. Stood first in fact. Got a lousy gift (a magnetic dart game in which the darts don’t stick), but felt good nevertheless, thanks to all the visibility winning the competition gave me.
  • Sold my Tamron 28-75mm and monopod and got a new 35mm f/2 and OC-E3 (Off camera shoe chord) as recent as yesterday. The 35mm f/2 is simply awesome.
  • Repaid a huge portion of my credit card debit. But have an equal portion that I recently piled up. :(
  • Planned to get a 40D but ditched the idea because of the above point.
  • Crashed my (office) laptop’s hard disk. Dell replaced it within a day. Dell is good.
  • Four months into my new  work and I really enjoying it. Looking back, I wonder if I made a mistake of sticking on to my earlier work place for4 years. But as they say, hindsight is always 20/20. Which reminds me…
  • Changed my spectacles. My power has increased too. And the best part - I have Nikon lenses in front of my eyes now :)

Mouthshut?

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Everyday and today — Pixelshooter Fri 17 Aug 2007 8:40 am

One website, which I love as a concept, is MouthShut.com. I don’t really visit the site often, but I think the idea of giving consumers a place to voice out their opinion is great. We live in a totally consumerist society, with kids of today growing up in Malls (if you don’t believe that, you should visit MG road on a weekend), so it is great to have a place to have our say.

Today while googling for reviews on Citibank’s Shopper’s Stop credit card, I stumbled upon Mouthshut.

A little history - I visited Shopper’s Stop near Banerghatta road a couple of weeks ago. A sales guy approached me and told me about the store’s First Citizen card and its benefits. At first I wasn’t interested, but after a while I was sold. As far as I remember, at no time during the conversation with the representative did he tell me that what they are really offering is a Citibank Credit card with a Shopper’s Stop logo. I filled in some forms, but forgot about the whole thing once I left the store.

I started receiving calls from Citibank after a few days for their mandatory background checks. In such situations, I let the agents do their job and don’t really shout at the them or anything. In fact, it didn’t occur to me that these phone calls are for this card and I didn’t even make a mental connection between Citibank and Shopper’s Stop (you get comfortably numb when these agents call you time and again).

Finally yesterday I got my card. It was no Shopper’s Stop First Citizen Silver (or Gold?) card. It is a full fledged Citibank credit card co-branded with Shopper’s Stop. Although I did feel irritated about the whole thing, I gave the benefit of doubt to Shopper’s Stop because I don’t really recall the conversation I had with the sales guy at their store. But I am sure that if I was told clearly that they are going to give me a credit-card, I would have refused the offer. And it turns out, as told on Mouthshut.com, that someone else has had a similar experience with Shopper’s Stop. So actually I was right and Shopper’s Stop does hide facts. Calling up the number listed on their welcome kit to find out details about annual fees didn’t help, because the number didn’t work.

Anyways, out of curiosity, I began checking reviews on other credit cards on Mouthshut.com. Interestingly, none of them have a decent rating. All of these credit cards seem to have a consistent (bad) rating of 2 stars (out of 5). Reading some of the user reviews, I was shocked at the kind of bad experiences some people have had. I have been using an HDFC card for the past 3 years and I have never had a bad experience with them (touch wood). I have had outstandings worth several ten thousands, but I have always made it a point to pay my minimum fee. I have been responsible from my side, and the bank has been from theirs. I have called customer service many times and have always had my problem solved. But on Mouthshut.com, I read bad reviews of HDFC bank, and from people who, like me, have been paying their dues.

Some interesting points:

  1. Most people choose to write a review only when they have a bad experience. I guess it is human to vent out your frustration when you are pissed. With this in mind, I wonder if you can really get a fair review about a product (from websites such as Mouthshut.com). If I were to go by the reviews I read about HDFC cards, I would have to think that it is a really bad product. But my own experience tells me otherwise.
  2. People like to use superlatives like ‘worst’, ‘never’, ‘best’. I personally wouldn’t write in such a manner. I would prefer to take a more balanced approach and leave it to the reader to judge. Of course, I am not expecting the same from everyone, but I wonder if the use of such words drives home the point. I mean, would I really spend time reading a review written in all caps and full of superlatives? No, I would pass on to the next review.
  3. Almost always, all fingers point towards customer service. Again, I think this is normal. When you are steaming and waiting to butcher someone, you don’t want to be placed on hold or be spoken to with a fake accent. Nevertheless, the truth is that raising your voice doesn’t help when you are on the phone with customer support. It might work in a real shop where the shopkeeper is worried about his reputation in front of other customers, but I wouldn’t want to shout at an agent.
  4. If you cannot handle something like a credit card, don’t ever sign-up for one. I think this is the simplest truth about credit cards. I suspect that most people who have had bad experiences with credit cards don’t know how to use one. They probably got one because of the over enthusiastic credit card agents who call at the wrong time. Many a times, the same mentality that makes you consume everything that comes you way, causes you to think that it is your birthright to abuse anyone who doesn’t treat you as king. I refuse to believe that customer is king. In today’s world, the customer is a pawn living in a vacuum of materialistism.

I make it a point to stick to one or two vendors in all walks of life and transact with them on a consistent basis. This is not because I am brand conscious, but because life becomes simpler that way. So if you ask me, HDFC, Spicejet, Indigo Airlines, Hutch, Fotocircle etc are all good people to deal with. But I also know that I cannot expect everyone to agree. Thats life :)

The Rebel finds something new to sit on

The Gorillapod landed in my hands yesterday. Simple but effective concept. Haven’t found time to test it, but should work as advertised. I have come across many satisfied customers. Right now the Gorillapod is with Rajith in Ooty. Having used it in the field, he should have some real world experiences to share once he’s back. Meanwhile, here are some pics:

Also purchased the Opteka Battery Grip for my Rebel XT. Was initially wary for buying a third party product because of quality issues that I had heard of, but then I bit the bullet. The grip, no doubt, enhances the handling of the Rebel XT. But how well the electronics function, I have to wait and watch. For one, I noticed my batteries draining out much faster with the battery grip attached. Whether this is because of keeping the battery grip switch in ON position, I don’t know. Only further usage will tell if the Opteka is really as good as the original Canon BG-E3.

Update: I also purchased the Manfrotto 484RC2 Ballhead and rapid-connect system. The Gorillapod and the R84 were made for each other :) See pic:

WordPress acting funny

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Everyday and today — Pixelshooter Tue 24 Oct 2006 6:05 am

WordPress has been acting funny lately, on my blog. Donno if it is because the SpamKarma plugin or my Web host. I can't access my website at times, and can't post without getting some stupid error. Grr…

Update: I upgraded to the latest version of WP. Hope the problem goes away.

Double update: My web host seemed to have fixed the problem after I wrote to them. Nice!

Finally back on track

Got my computer after a month. I was just about getting comfortable without it, working towards sticking to a timetable of exercise and extra curricular activites like reading novels. Now that it is back, have a huge backlog of things to do. Also, I realised the true value of my new lens when I saw it on my monitor. All this while I was only able to see it on my office PC. Now I know how truly sharp it is!

Recently I stumbled up on the official website of Youth Hostels of India. There's an interesting trip being organized in December. Hoping to be able to make it.

Orkut = lost and found

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Everyday and today — Pixelshooter Fri 11 Aug 2006 11:32 am

I met a very old friend of mine on Orkut today. Nah, nothing surprising about that because I have found many long lost pals there, but interestingly this chap is working at the same client company as I do. I was quite excited actually, when I found his name in the company directory. I added him on the intranet IM and buzzed him. He was as surprised as I was. We were good friends till about 1997 when I changed schools. Oh yea, the only thing is that he is working in Singapore, and I am in Bangalore.

I don't personally like Orkut. It's nice for networking and all, but can get really annnoying, especially with the scrap book thingy. Someone once dubbed it a matrimonial site. Lol! I'd second that. But every dark cloud has a silver lining, and Orkut's is it's reach. Yes, half the youth population is there, so chances of finding old friends is pretty high. Like how I did today. Feeling good. :)

When things move past you

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Everyday and today — Pixelshooter Thu 10 Aug 2006 8:26 am

Lotsa things have been happening lately, and I haven't bothered to make a mention of it in my blog (or elsewhere). Not that I HAVE to make a mention, but I guess it's nice to construct a timeline somewhere ahead in time, reading old posts in your own blog.

I bought a tripod on 6th of July. I already had a cheapo Vivitar one that I purchased couple of years ago, but that wouldn't do as I found out on my trip to Bhutan. So when I found the Slik Pro 700 DX legs for sale on one of the local photography forums, I wasted no time in checking it out and making a purchase. In the process I accuqainted myself with the seller who turned out to be a nice guy and a enthusiastic photographer. In fact he's offered to help me test the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 that he has, on my camera.

Soon after buying the tripod, I *had* to buy a ball head. The tripod legs is only half the story. You need a 'head' to actually mount the camera. And heads come in two varieties - ball head and tilt/pan head. Ball heads are better because they offer fluid and flexible movement. After careful research, I went in for a Manfrotto 488RC0. It set me back by coupla thousands.

Some time after that that I actually made my website. Yes, after tons of procrasticanation, http://pixelshooter.net is finally up. But I like to think of it as a beta site as there are many ideas yet to be implemented.  And no, it has no Flash. I just can't find the time and energy to build a flash website :(

And just when I was brimming with things to do, my computer gave up on me. It went completley dead, not even a BIOS screen. Gave it to my computer dealer and it's been there for two weeks now cos his dad popped and he had to go out of town. Maybe I had some karmic debts with his dad. Two weeks without a computer is not actually very bad, but there is so much yet to do 'cos I was just about migrating to x64 bit Windows XP.

So as of now, I am reading Sherlock Holmes and learning to spend time without a computer at home. Next week a friend and I will be off to Managalore, and I hope to do some serious night photography with my new tripod :)

It’s a bug’s life

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Everyday and today — Pixelshooter Sat 1 Jul 2006 7:31 am

I am home this saturday after god knows how many weekends. I have been out every saturday since the past many months and that totally sucks. So many things have been put into the backburner because of lack of time. My website for instance. And today is totally devoted for housekeeping. Lots of data to backup, lotsa cleaning to be done and lotsa sleep to catch up on :)

There is something else that’s not been happening since a while now. I was thinking of it last night, and I intend to write about it sometime. I have been thinking of where my writing is going. I don’t write as much as I used to, and some people have been complaining about it. I am well aware of this change in me, and I don’t blame working saturdays for this.

My camera has also been sitting in the shelf for a long time now. Maybe I have outgrown the 18-55mm, but I really need to invest in a new lens. The Sigma 24-70mm EX  has been recommended, although I am inclined to get the Tamron 28-75mm. Of course, I am all set to make a huge investment in any one of these, except for the for the lack of Vitamin M :(

Anyway, its back to housekeeping for now.

I’ll just crack a joke..

Bubba’s sister was pregnant and was in a bad car accident, which
caused her to fall into a deep coma.

After nearly six months, she awoke and saw that she was no longer
pregnant.

Frantically, she asked the doctor about her baby.

The doctor replied, "Ma’am, you had twins - a boy and a girl. The
babies are fine. Your brother came in and named them."

The woman thought to herself, "Oh, no! Not Bubba; he’s not that
bright!"

Expecting the worst, she asked the doctor, "Well, what’s the girl’s
name?"

"Denise," the doctor answers.

The new mother thinks, "Wow! That’s a beautiful name I guess I was
wrong about my brother. I really like the name Denise."

Then she asks the doctor, "What’s the boy’s name?"

The doctor replies, "Denephew!!!"
