Free 2 Mbps broadband by 2009

NEW DELHI: The government proposes to offer free, high-speed broadband connectivity to all Indians by 2009, through state-owned telecom service providers BSNL and MTNL.

While consumers will cheer it, the move holds the potential to kill the telecom business as we know it. You may have heard of free municipal broadband—many cities in the US have drenched themselves in wireless broadband connectivity, freely accessible to residents. The idea is to boost economic activity in general. The central government plans to achieve free broadband connectivity at a speed of 2 MB per second across the country, with a similar goal.

The spambots are back

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Rant,Tech — Pixelshooter Tue 24 Apr 2007 8:45 am

Some time ago I had written how my blog saw no spam after moving to a new host. Looks like I spoke too fast. The spambots are back and eating into my blog again. But not at the rate of 15 spam comments/day (yet).

Sigh…

Forums and stupid people

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Rant — Pixelshooter Mon 23 Apr 2007 7:25 am

Forums are a great means of sharing information. In fact, I spend a lot of time online reading and participating in forums. However, as always, the presence of stupid people at forums is a big put-off. So typically there are 2 kinds of forums – forums that concentrate on highly technical/specific topics and forums general in nature. The former is usually ‘elite’ and this is good in a way. The later can also be good, save for idiots and newbies who once in a while hop on thinking that asking a question can save them from using their common sense/putting a little effort. Typically, stupid people at forums:

  1. Ask questions which have already been discussed to death a million times before. All they need to do is use the ‘search’ function and dig up past discussions on the same topic. The only good reason I see why people wouldn’t use the search function is when the site’s site function is down. Lack of time is NOT an excuse of asking the same question for the zillionth time. If you don’t have the time to search, it doesn’t mean others who contribute out from their own time should take the pain to respond.
  2. Ask open ended questions or questions without clarity. So you want to buy a new camera. How the hell are we to suggest which one to buy, without knowing what is your intended use?
  3. Make assumptions that people can answer your question without knowing the facts. “Hey, my comp just crashed. What could be wrong?” Who are you expecting to answer such a question? Mind readers? Worse is when people make assumptions that everyone lives in the same city as they do.
  4. Use the post unimaginative subject lines. “Help! Urgent!”. “I have a problem”.
  5. Ask the same question in many different sections of the forum, probably hoping to get noticed faster. I can forgive people posting in the wrong section, but not the ones who would do anything to grab attention just because they are in such a hurry.
  6. Ask a question and stop posting after that. Generally the person responding would like some clarifications, but if you have got your answer already, why don’t you say it? A thank you or box of sweets is not really required. But just mentioning that your problem is solved helps. Basic courtesy.
  7. Ask a question in great detail, manage to get their problem resolved outside of the forum and end the thread by saying, “hey, I fixed the problem myself!” Good going dude, but can you also post how you fixed the problem so that others who have similar problems can be benefited?

I can forgive blokes who write in all caps, spell horribly or use SMS language. I can also forgive the kids who like to play “mine is bigger than yours”. But the kind of posters I have elaborated above should be first sent to school and then asked to post.

And before I conclude, let me tell you about this unique breed of suckers at Indian forums – they glorify anyone who is even a tad bit better than them. They hero worship in the open shamelessly and use all the adjectives they know, to do this. I find this behaviour very funny, because although I do honestly acknowledge someone who is better than I am, I don’t place them on a pedastal and worship them because I have enough sense to see separate the gods from people who have just gotten better at what they are only learning. But it’s not hard to understand why this is so Indian. Just listen to the actors who are hero-worshipped in our country ;)

They just grow into you and never leave. Awesome music and even better lyrics. Sample this:

Here in My Room

This party is old and uninviting
Participants all in black and white.
You enter in full blown technicolor
Nothing is the same after tonight.

If the world were to fall apart
In a fiction-worthy wind
I wouldn’t change a thing now that you’re here
Your love is a verb
Here in my room. (x3)
Your love is a verb
Here in my room. (x3)

You enter and close the door behind you
Now show me the world as seen from the stars.
If only the lights would dim a little,
I’m wary of eyes upon my scars

If the world were to fall apart
In a fiction-worthy wind
I wouldn’t change a thing now that you’re here
Your love is a verb
Here in my room (x3)
Your love is a verb
Here in my room. (x3)

Pink tractorbeam into your incision
Head spinning as free as Dervishs’ whirl
I came here expecting next to nothing
So thank you for being “that” kind of girl

Photoshop CS3 is here

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Photography,Photos,Tech,Travel — Pixelshooter Sat 21 Apr 2007 9:48 am

I got to try out the new version of Photoshop – CS3. I have been using PS from version 7 and the UI improvements in CS3 are more than welcome. In fact, it is interesting to note how the guys at Adobe have managed to make UI improvements within the given real estate. Everything is intuitive and I didn’t even need to look at the ‘What’s new’ section. What’s more, Digital Photographers have finally got a lot of what they’ll need in Photoshop – better B&W controls, improved Camera Raw etc. And it is interesting to note that ImageReady no longer ships with Photoshop. Has it been laid to rest?

Here is a snap that I worked on using Lightroom and the new Photoshop CS3. I am not pleased with the outcome (the original file itself was underexposed) but it’s me and not the tools to blame ;)

Updated the snap with a better version :)

Why do we do things we do?

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Contemplative — Pixelshooter Sun 15 Apr 2007 4:17 pm

When I was 20 something I first heard the words “why does anybody do anything?” on Pink Floyd’s DSotM. At that time I was looking for answers to questions I didn’t even know and somewhere this question got lost among many other things (including my gumption). But today while chatting with a friend about the state of affairs at work and my life in general, I realized that what I look forward to from life is definitely and intricately tied up with what I expect from work. But talking about work is not something I am going to do here. I’ll just talk about two things which I have always sought from life.

The first thing that I have always wanted from life is experience. This is a loaded word. For some it might be a comb life gives you after you’ve gone bald, and for others it might be the ‘rush’ that we all seek consciously or unconsciously (or have seeked). I use this word to mean something in between these two concepts. I have always wanted to experience what it feels like to be alone and have no one but yourself for company. I have felt it and it has given me a sense of fulfilement. I have experienced how it feels like to travel unplanned and get stuck in an alien city and I have learnt a thing or two from this.

The second what I have wanted from life is growth. Growth can come from experience, from a conscious effort to learn, from interacting with smart people, from failures…..from many things. But not to grow is to stagnate and to stagnate is to die. Even dogs on the street learn not to step in front of speeding vehicles because they know what would happen. And they have learnt how to cross roads. Which means they have grown from being immature four legged creatures that didn’t know that a car could kill, to being able to cross a busy street. Sometimes this growth happens out of the need to survive. But largely, growth has a lot to do with attitude, intelligence and willful need to want to grow.

How does all this relate to work? Simple. Everything I do, whether the profession I choose or the vacation I plan, is keeping either or both of the above in mind. Either I want to experience something or I want to learn (and hence grow). In every relationship I want to experience things like love, togetherness, happiness yada, yada and at the same time grow to be a better person. Basically, when I neither grow nor get anything feelgood out of a situation or a person, I quit. Cos there’s simply nothing more for me in it anymore. And this way I have either quit, or simply not even shown interest in many a people, places and things. For example I always avoided Bollywood movies cos there is nothing in it for me. I know people who have been amazed at the fact that I don’t watch Bollywood movies. I have always avoided such people too. Cos apart from the fact that they are not aware of an alternate source of entertainment, it also reflects the fact that they have not been ‘exposed’ to the fact that someone can actually not watch Bollywood movies. This probably sounds either totally absurd to you, or you might be thinking ‘I hear ya..’. But trust me, I have come across such individuals who have been completely surprised about someone not interested in Bollywood movies/music and staying away from them has never proved costly.

But all this talk about experience, growth and Bollywood brings us to something else – the kind of people who are out there in this world. Clearly there are people who neither want to grow nor want to experience something new, something ‘high’ (a subjective word, I know) or something fresher. I have seen blokes in buses carrying cellphones playing mp3 tunes of latest brash Hindi tracks, as though the stuff played on MTV (and a dozen other channels) is not enough. I have seen people resisting change, smug in what little they know or feel. But then, who am I to judge? That’s right. Everything and everyone’s cool about living and let living. But only as long as these stagnant people don’t stand in your way.

Coming back to what I was talking about initially – why do we do things we do, I can speak for myself and say I do things to either experience something or cause a reaction that will help me grow. I avoid spending time doing things that don’t have either of these two in return. Lately I have been indulging in petty things like road rage which, one moment after I’ve let out the steam does feel like a stupid thing to have done but that’s the part I need to work on – how to move on and not get bogged down by people who stand in my way. Needless to say, these people neither share my sense of direction (or search for a sense of direction), nor stand on my way because they want to. Such people generally exist pretty cluelessly, so ‘stand in my way’ shouldn’t be taken as offensively as it sounds. It’s just that I see too many people standing around cluelessly and it gets crowded and hinders swift movement of people like me who want to get someplace fast. And I don’t like to push. To top it, these days we need to collaborate and work with all kinds of people without too much of a choice at times, and when the ratio of cool v/s uncool (categorize and judge at your will) becomes skewed, things get to you.

Of course life is not so easy that I can summarize it in a blog post. The interconnections spread deep and complex, and it takes more words to straighten them out for observation. For example, I have chosen to put up with lowly people where I presently work because in return I have more free time to learn new things and go to new places. That’s only part of how things are related. There’s more but I don’t want to get into that now. Cos when straightened out and observed with a keen mind, life’s problems always appear simple and the solutions seem so obvious that you might appear stupid for not implementing them. But it’s not as simple as it appears. Or you are not as simple as the solution can be. Always.

Nevertheless, remember that you always have to first get into yourself and understand why you arrived at this. And I have looked into myself and I’ve realized that I seek to grow and I seek experiences that gave me the direction that brought me here. Where to I go from here? Gotta see.

Saved from spam

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Tech — Pixelshooter Sat 14 Apr 2007 2:13 am

Like I had said in an earlier post, Askimet used to catch at least a hundred spam comments in a month. Since when I installed it in September last, (6 month ago) Akismet has caught 26,08 spam comments. That is roughly 430 comments per month or 15 comments per day. But after changing hosts 2 weeks ago, there has not been even a single spam comment. I also intentionally took my blog offline for a weekend, hoping to de-list my site from the Spam Robots’ list (if such a thing exists at all). I don’t know which one of these two has caused the spam count to hit zero. Maybe someone who knows how these Spam Robots work can explain better?

New skin for my Creative Zen Vision W (with photos!)

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Reviews,Tech — Pixelshooter Wed 11 Apr 2007 9:25 am

My cousin sent the skin I had ordered for my Creative Zen Vision W through a friend and it reached me yesterday. Here are some pics of it (click on the thumbnail) :)

img_0900.JPG

The package in which it came

img_0901.JPG

The ‘dummy’ player and the skin

img_0905.JPG

My player without the skin (yea, I know its dusty)….note the screen protector looking all shiny (it doesn’t hinder the viewing experience though)

img_0906.JPG

After putting on the skin

img_0907.JPG

The nav keys and such are exposed

img_0908.JPG

Its got the zen logo embossed just like how it is in the player itself

img_0909.JPG

The volume keys and the ON/OFF switch

Overall, the skin is ok. It’s soft, but a dust magnet. There is absolutely no protection for the screen and it actually does not protect the player if you drop it. But we don’t go around dropping hard-drives right? (this player has a Hitachi Travelstar hard-drive inside. Someone actually dismantled and saw!). More than dropping the player, I am paranoid about the screen breaking. It has the largest surface area and so obviously it’s more prone to such a thing. But I am not sure if anything can be done to protect the screen, except for some careful handling.

I paid $19.99 but now the skin sells for $15.00 :( Anyways, hope my player feels warm and cosy inside its new skin
