The Bhutan Experience in words

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Travel — Pixelshooter Fri 24 Feb 2006 4:14 am

I finally put together my thoughts and came up with this writeup. Thanks to the good people who reviewed and helped me with the design.

I intended to make a webpage of the travelogue, but due to lack of time stuck with the PDF. Of course, the image gallery is next :)

Processing pictures, documenting my experiences, coming to terms with the mundane and generally relaxing after being away from home for 10 days. Stay tuned for more!

Hello, can I go online?

The time has come….well, almost

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Travel — Pixelshooter Thu 9 Feb 2006 8:24 am

I will be leaving early tomorrow to Calcutta. From there, 3 of us will be going to Siliguri and then hopefully Bhutan. Why ‘hopefully?’ Because we haven’t booked any rooms or made any arrangements as such. Only once we get there we’ll know for ourselves what is possible and what isn’t. backpack.jpg

At the moment, I have only a few concerns in mind:

1) Will 2 gigs of memory be sufficient? I shoot RAW  90% of the times, and each RAW file is around 8 – 9mb.  I get around 100 shots each with my 1 gig Lexar  and Sandisk cards. That makes it approximately 200  shots. Sufficient?

2) Touchwood, touchwood, touchwood, touchwood….I don’t want to return home lighter!

3) To take the tripod or not to take the tripod. I guess I’ll take it. Especially useful if I do go to Darjeeling.

4) What if I find my 18-5mm EFS lens lacking? What if I feel like kicking myself for not buying that 50mm f/1.8?

And I just realized that Ozh’s plugin don’t work for Opera. I am begining to dislike Opera. It needs to get back with the rest of the herd. And no, I don’t mean IE.

WordPress 2.0.1 released

A week ago. I think I need to upgrade my blog. But that will prolly happen later. As of now, I am preparing for what looks like a trip to Bhutan. Tawang has been ditched, because of the Inner Line Permit which takes 3 weeks to be issued.

Btw, Bangalore Shutterbugs have released their newsletter – BeyondShotz. Interesting read.

RDB

Blogged by Pixelshooter as Reviews — Pixelshooter Sun 5 Feb 2006 1:24 pm

I watched Rang de Basanti last evening. I watch local language movies rarely, but when I do, I make sure there is a good reason for me to spend 150 bucks/3 hours on them. And so yesterday I was sitting four rows away from the silver screen (and that was supposed to be a back stall ticket) at Rex, getting rather absorbed…

I liked RDB because it was not your usual bollywood flick. The story, narration, acting and most importantly – the moral of the movie were all different. Different only from the cliches playing always. Nothing unique about the movie though. And yes, the first half which nicely portrays an average delhi youth’s life gets you involved.

I didn’t like RDB because it misused a good oppurtunity of sending a subtle message to the urban youth (the category this movie appeals to the most). As someone already blogged, youth + violence = not nice. No spoilers from me; go watch the movie yourself. And two kind souls have already blogged exactly what I had in mind. Read Rashmi Bansal’s thoughts here and another blogger’s thoughts on why it is not such a good movie here. I like and share both points of view.

Getting busy with packing/planning for Friday’s trip. So far the only thing we’ve got planned is:

Calcutta -> Guwhati -> Tawang/?/?/?/? -> Guwhati -> Calcutta. And to think that I am spending a lot of money for flight tickets and all, not even sure of the places we will be visiting :(

It was a rather uneventful week. And because of that I desperately wanted to go out and shoot some pictures today. Sadly, or rather not so sadly, Lalbagh is the only decent option for early morning walks and shoots. And so I was there, at 7:30, walking shoes, camera and all (did I say early morning?). To my disappointment the sun was quite high above in the sky and smiling gleefully. When he does that, my camera has a problem capturing the dynamic range of a scene. The highlights are usually blown and the colours washed out when it is too sunny. But today I tried to play with light and shade.

So I had fun shooting for about an hour and afterwards headed towards the exit near the East gate. Just then I spotted these two guys with big zoom lenses and tripods near the lake. Clearly, they where shooting birds. Thought I’d just say a hi (was feeling friendly this morn) and walked up to them. And oh man! What attitude they were trying to show! Some guys think that the size of the lens on their camera talks about the size of their you-know-what. And with nose up in the air (not just to spot birds), the only thing they were willing to say was: MINE IS BIGGER THAN YOURS! Ha ha!
